Pursuits Manager

Calgary, AB · Full-time · Management

About The Position

Heavy works with architects, artists, developers, and contractors to plan and build world-class art, architecture, and placemaking features.

Our strength lies in bridging concepts and execution, taking ambitious ideas and turning them into buildable, high-quality outcomes.

While we continue to grow our early-stage Studio and developer relationships, a significant portion of our work today comes through General Contractors and Construction Managers. This role is focused on winning that work—while helping position Heavy for more strategic involvement over time.

Role Overview

The Pursuits Lead is responsible for identifying, shaping, and securing projects primarily through GC/CM-led procurement and relationships.

This role focuses on:

  • Winning work where concepts already exist and require a strong builder mindset
  • Translating design intent into clear scope, pricing, and execution strategy
  • Building strong relationships with GCs, architects, and project teams
  • Supporting selective early engagement opportunities where Heavy can add strategic value

This is a practical, execution-oriented role with a strong commercial lens—not a purely conceptual or marketing-driven position.

Core Responsibilities

1. Drive GC-Focused Pursuits

  • Build and maintain relationships with General Contractors, Construction Managers, and preconstruction teams
  • Identify and pursue GC-led opportunities
  • Position Heavy as a trusted partner for complex scopes
  • Support GC teams in strengthening pursuits where Heavy adds value

Outcome: Increased volume and quality of work secured through GC channels

2. Translate Concepts into Buildable Scope & Pricing

  • Develop clear scope definitions, construction methodologies, and execution plans
  • Build accurate, competitive budgets grounded in real execution
  • Identify risks, gaps, and assumptions early
  • Align pricing with market conditions and project realities

Outcome: Credible, competitive numbers that win work and protect margin

3. Lead Pursuit Strategy & Execution

  • Own pursuits from identification through to contract award
  • Define strategy, pricing position, and key win factors
  • Coordinate across Estimating, Studio, Engineering, and Operations
  • Lead follow-up and negotiations

Outcome: Well-executed pursuits with higher win rates

4. Support Strategic & Signature Opportunities

  • Identify opportunities for early engagement
  • Support positioning on high-visibility or complex projects
  • Participate in early-stage discussions where applicable

Outcome: Increased early-stage involvement over time

5. Set Projects Up for Execution Success

  • Ensure clear documentation of scope, assumptions, and risks
  • Support transition from pursuit to delivery
  • Align internal teams before project kickoff

Outcome: Strong handoffs and fewer execution issues

Additional Responsibilities

  • Lead pursuit and preconstruction coordination meetings
  • Collaborate with project managers, estimators, and leadership
  • Improve proposal templates and pursuit tools
  • Support value engineering (VE) and alternate strategies
  • Contribute to process improvements
  • Assist with pipeline tracking, forecasting, and procurement strategy

Who You Are

  • Comfortable operating at both strategy and execution levels
  • Strong relationship builder (internally and externally)
  • Confident working with GC teams and stakeholders
  • Driven, competitive, and self-directed
  • Personable with the ability to build trust quickly
  • Comfortable working in ambiguity and making calculated decisions
  • Practical thinker who can move from concept to scope to budget to execution
  • Strong judgment on where to invest time and when to walk away

Requirements

  • 10+ years in construction, fabrication, or design-build environments
  • Strong experience working with GCs/CMs and preconstruction teams
  • Deep understanding of construction methods, materials, and delivery
  • Proven ability to build budgets from incomplete information
  • Strong commercial acumen (pricing, margin, competitiveness)
  • Experience with complex or custom scopes is highly preferred
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, and standard project tools
